In order to make it easier for novice computer users Windows has turned off the showing of file extensions. This prevents newbies from accidentally changing some file's extension and which may lead to problems with opening the file.

But for any user that already has some experience with computers this becomes annoying.

Follow these steps to turn on file extensions:
  • Open My Computer.
  • Click Tools from the menu and then select Folder Options…
  • Switch to the View tab.
  • Locate Hide extensions for known file types and then uncheck it.

Missing OneNote Icon

Microsoft OneNote is a great note taking software. It puts an icon in the tray in order to help you has quick access to it. Don't worry the program when minimized is unloaded from the memory and is not using your valuable computer resources like memory and CPU power.

It puts a shortcut in the Startup folder in your All Programs menu. But sometimes the icon may disappear. This is caused if you or something else deletes this file.

If you add a shortcut manually you will it doesn't work as expected. That's because you should add a parameter '/tsr' to the target line. It should typically look like:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\ONENOTEM.EXE" /tsr

Make sure that you also enabled the tray icon in the OneNote Options menu.
